As always, please be sure to check out the folks who gave their time to chat about these games. They put aside their time and energy for Bronze League, so all I ask is that you do the same in return! All of the names in the headlines are hyperlinks, so check out these Bronze Buds and the games they recommend!
renee (astRENaut) - Minecraft (2007, 2021)
I'm pretty late to the craze but the name of the game is Minecraft, baby. I got into Minecraft in the winter of 2021 shortly after I began my short-lived streaming career while I was furloughed due to the pandemic. I had never played it before but the most enticing aspect of the game was being able to play with friends. I feel like I don't even need to explain why the game is so great, it pretty much speaks for itself. It's timeless and endlessly fun (unless you're my friends and you binge for two weeks straight in which case there is an expiration date on said fun) and the developers come out with updates pretty frequently to keep things spicy. The only thing I will say is that once we beat the Ender Dragon, my drive to play the game tanked significantly. But that has everything to do with our server feeling very burnt out by that point.
This review barely even scratches the surface. There are so many different ways you can play this game, since it's a sandbox that happens to have a plot. If you opt to play on Java, there are so many mods that you can add and in addition, your computer fan will probably turn into a flying object and fly off into orbit. But regardless if you're on Java or Bedrock, there are over 60 biomes you can explore and I feel like that alone can take someone a year to unravel.
Like I mentioned before, pretty much my driving force to play this game is playing with friends. It's still fun to play on your own, but this game was such a saving grace for my sanity last winter when we couldn't see each other in person. The feeling was akin to the Animal Crossing: New Horizons wave of early pandemic (and I swore that this would last longer than that) but this game is so much more versatile.
You know what they say I guess, "it's not about the mines you craft but the friends you make along the way" or some shit. I just made that up.
Artych - Dying Light 2 (2022)
Dying Light 2 is a first person, open world, role playing game in which you play as Aiden Caldwell. A pilgrim coming to one of the last remaining cities after the collapse of humanity, post a viral infection that mutates humans into zombies and crazier mutated variants.
Dying Light 2 is one of a few games where traversal is one of the most engaging mechanics. Parkour along the safety of the rooftops, glide around in the paraglider, or risk the infected filled streets below. I never felt the need to use fast travel due to how fun it was to run and jump around, even after 70 hours of game time. Having the music swell as you begin to chain parkour moves and the self motivating cheers from Aiden pushing you forward.
Combat is tight and responsive. Story is intriguing and role playing decisions make a difference to the world and how you interact with it.
The original Dying Light was a solid proof of concept. Dying Light 2 improves many aspects that the first game failed with, and improved many parts that the original nailed. Not a perfect game, but a damn good one.
Camron Bainbridge (Oopsie) - Super Auto Pets (2021)
Buy me…meat me…roll me, sell me, freeze me. These are the things that you will be saying before sending your pets to war. With little money to spend each turn, you are tasked to create the most optimal team to best your opponents. There are a variety of different combinations to try, each equally able to crush the opposition.
Super Auto Pets is a free to play game that is entirely capable of eating your entire afternoon. Each run that pitters out before reaching the coveted 10 trophies, just draws you back in. From upgrading your fish so your group gets a +2/+3 to killing your ant just for a chance of your kangaroo getting a +6/+3. There are surprisingly in depth mechanics that make me want to load up every night. Give the game a download and play for a bit, who knows you might end up having some fun :)
