Classic WoW Guild Leader: Butt Nuts
What's it like to lead a classic WoW guild? Buttnuts talks about the good, the bad, and everything in between.
FOR THE HORDE!!!!!
My lovely roommate and bff Peter (StylishDad) is a part of a Classic (TBC) guild called Top. We were goofin’ around in NYC one weekend, and wanted to meet up with Pete’s guild leader, and that’s exactly what we did! Buttnuts was his name, a glorious alias. Buttnuts is much more than a guild leader, but a friend. He was kind enough to stop by to chat about what it is like to lead a group of hooligans through some of toughest content WoW has to offer.

If you sent me your game rec and you don’t see it here, it may not be posted this week but it will get posted! Thank you for your patience <3

I am excited to put “Buttnuts” in big letters on a graphic, what made you settle on this name?
I used to play on a private server called “Kronos” where I had an undead warlock named “MEATNUTS”. It got a lot of popularity and eventually when classic Vanilla launched I settled on Buttnuts as something phonetically pleasing and memorable. My toon just kind of looks like he’d be named “buttnuts” and it’s one of few silly words that bypasses the blizzard name generator.
What is it like to run a classic WoW guild that raids 2+ times a week?
For the most part - it’s a really really enjoyable experience. I never thought I’d be running a guild like this for this long - but out of my small group of friends who started playing Classic together - I stuck around and knew how to talk to people.
Functionally - I really enjoy the aspect of putting together rosters, optimizing compositions, and working through strategies. Spreadsheeting out comps is one of my favorite parts of the game!
Most of the management part happens organically. Working through everyone’s personalities, making sure everyone is satisfied, that rosters are full, that we’re competing at a reasonably high level.
This is a common idiom among WoW GM’s but it’s basically like managing 25-50 adult babies at all times who also drink a TON.
It’s both rewarding when we blast, and when I get to see guys I’ve played with for years get insanely sick loot, and a bit draining at times.
Running Top can’t be easy, what are the toughest parts of dealing with all the goofballs? What was the worst WoW experience you’ve had?
The hardest part of it all is just trying to make sure that the expectations / goals are the same among 25 people. Some people play for fun, other people can’t stay consistent, so just balancing all of that on top of my actual life is always a challenge.
The worst WoW experience was one long night in AQ40 - we were wiping and wiping and our world buffs were long gone. No one was talking, no one was bothering to use consumes or play the right way anymore. It was one of maybe two times in my entire classic experience where I thought to myself, “I could just quit right here, and never think about this again”. The best part of WoW is always when you’re blasting along, and everyone’s cruising, and people are awake and at their keys and laughing and bosses are melting. The worst is when people stop trying.
That ended up turning into me going giga-mode and farming consumables for half of my entire 40 man raid team to push us through the end of Naxxramas which was satisfying - but also the birth of :buttnutshairline:
On the flip side, I have heard StylishDad doing some serious giggles during raid night. What is your best memory from running the guild?
I have had so many insane genuine laughs from over the years. It’s such a tough call to pick ONE of the best memories.
My favorite all-time moment is probably killing KT in the original classic. The sheer waterfall of relief, joy, and the flood of emotion knowing that we finally beat the game, was an unbelievable feeling even for a videogame. It was our last attempt of the night, we were drained of consumes, resources, on our last leg.
The hours that followed were just the best. Flooding of emotions, insanely good loot, stories, speeches, screenshots. Not much can top that in this game, and since that moment nothing has.
Honorable Mentions:
Isheka admitting he got worms mid-raid
Swiftlist getting Glaive
First pre-nerf Vashj kill
Jump contest
Duel Tournaments
Fighting Mindgames in the Gurubashi Arena
PVPing on weekends with the boys
If you could fist fight any guild member who would it be and why?
Easily Prot so he could one-tap me and claim his true dominance over the guild
Having internet friends is awesome, but what’s even better is meeting up with them IRL. What is this experience like for you? Do they call you Buttnuts in person? (I know I did)
I’ve met a crazy amount of my raiders IRL. It’s been sick every time. Coupla bevvies, coupla boys, outrageous fun. Everyone calls me buttnuts - even when I’m introduced to other people. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Hoping to meet more at the <Top> Vegas Meetup™
Do you see an end in sight for your WoW Career or do you plan to keep on rolling through the expansions?
I’m never going to stop playing this game. It’s just the best thing. I always always enjoy it and I always come back to it.
I don’t plan on guild-leading past this expansion, but I said that at the end of last expansion, so you never know.
I’d happily jam into battle with many of my raiders for another expansion, but I’m hoping to blast a little harder in WOTLK!
Here is your time to PLUG! Tell everyone what you have been working on and what they should be checking out.
I don’t work on anything except this damn game - but if you’re a geared resto shaman come THROUGH and dm me on discord @Buttnuts#1805

Rapid Fire Round:
Pre-raid ritual: Sitting in my room and walking back in forth in front of the summoning stone while my heart races
Biggest weeny in Top: Bewbzie/Bigwooz by a HUGE margin
Best weeny in Top: I think it’s Urgg but it’s close.
Last time you pooped your pants: Literally today
Go-to raid snack: I never eat or drink while raiding actually. Need to maintain 100% focus.
